Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) Installation
TRAUTMAN & SHREVE VALUE DELIVERED
Trautman & Shreve, in joint venture with M-E Engineers, performed the complete design/build mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) installation. Fully coordinated 3-D CAD drawings were supplied during this process. With the design/build and mechanical construction efforts scheduled to begin at the same time, Trautman & Shreve's designer(s) needed to skillfully design the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems as they were being installed.
MECHANICAL CONSTRUCTION SCOPE OF WORK
The installation of HVAC systems, plumbing systems, sheet metal duct systems, fire protection systems, and electrical systems (by EMCOR's Dynalectric Company) were required for this mechanical construction project. Included in the installations to complete the open building HVAC systems were 413 fans, 351 cabinet unit heaters, 158 unit heaters, 215 water source heat pumps, 6 boilers, 3 cooling towers & over 50,000 or more than 9 miles of HVAC piping.
The oval shape of the building also required some creative installation to our piping systems. Custom fittings were required to loop each pipe run around the different concourse levels. Most pipe fittings are made in 45°, 90° or 180° allowing square turns. The shape of the stadium required fittings with varying angles of 2° to 12° and each concourse level was different. Our CAD department generated precise drawings to the 10th°enabling Trautman & Shreve to custom design, fabricate & install 200 fittings.
The vast plumbing system included 3,000 fixtures, 25 hot water heaters, 2-3,000 gal. hot water generators & 3 electronically controlled domestic water booster pumps for 120 public
facilities, 140 suites, each with its own private restroom facility & a bar sink, 60 large concession stands, commissary kitchen, 2 restaurant clubs & locker rooms for the Broncos, visiting team, cheerleaders, referees, coaches & 2 auxiliary locker rooms.
The grass will never be greener at any other field thanks to the unique filled heating system installed by Tratuman & Shreve. With over 23 miles of soil warming pipe installed in 20 days, Trautman & Shreve became the first U.S. contractor to install this type of field heating system in the U.S. Two boilers feed temperate water to the piping while 10 telephone activated control sensors are strategically located throughout the field to control and insure ideal conditions. Field temperature changes are only a phone call away with this system. Tratuman & Shreve's flawless safety record included over 200 men at peak & over 350,000 man-hours.
ENTERTAINMENT FACILITY BACKGROUND
Metropolitan Football Stadium District was a corporate body and political subdivision of the state of Colorado. It was established pursuant to the Metropolitan Football Stadium District Act, Article 15, Title 32 of the Colorado Revised Statutes, ("Act"). The District
included all, or part of, six counties in the Denver Metropolitan area. The purpose of the District was planning, land acquisition and construction of a professional football stadium. The Stadium Management Company LLS is the management company overseeing all operations at Invesco Field at Mile High.
OBJECTIVES
At the official groundbreaking, Mr. Bowlen (owner of the Broncos) spoke of the bright future for the Broncos, the City of Denver, and the State of Colorado. "As we face a new millennium, we are moving forward together in building a world class stadium for our city and our state."
MECHANICAL CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS
The accelerated schedule required extraordinary efficiency, coordination and innovation. Trautman & Shreve, Inc. coordinated the entire team of contractors on the mechanical construction project. The in-house CAD department developed and maintained accurate large-scale drawings with isometric views and 3-dimensional collision check coordination. Therefore, full modeling of the entire project was in 3-D. This allowed Trautman & Shreve, Inc. to maximize fabrication and substantially reduce labor in the field that ultimately reduced costs and protected the schedule. As stated by Mike Wisneski, Project Architect, "Trautman & Shreve, Inc. design/build processes are world class."
